From Native Americans to Tibetan Buddhists and Sufi Muslims, chanting has often been a way of expressing one's spirituality. In fact, many sects would argue that music itself is a necessary part of spiritual life. Containing a wide variety of music, Invocations is an excellent compilation that shows us how different cultures use chanting as part of their religion. Artists heard on this CD range from Indian Hindus (R.A. Ramamani & the Karnataka College of Percussion, Trichy Sankaran) and Turkish Sufi Muslims (Nayram Bilge Toker) to Japanese Zen Buddhists (Tadashi Tajima). The Latin group Nueva Generaccion shows its awareness of the Santeria sect on "Canto Para Eleggua," while Cornel Pewewardy celebrates his Native American heritage with the traditional "Kiowa Hymn."
